Dancer of the Week-Crystal Belcher
Who is Crystal Belcher? Best described as a pocket-sized powerhouse, full of energy, laughs and light! Most recently I am known for my work in pole dance fitness and artistry. I am a national champion, international instructor, Texas State, "Pole Sport Organization" and "Black Girls Pole" Ambassador and creator of "Melee on the Bayou: Houston's Premier Pole Dance Competition." If I am not performing on stage or hosting an exhibition or competition, I am a student of dance, supporter of music and connoisseur of FUN!
Where are you from? Houston, TX
Where are you located? Houston, TX and beyond!
What style of dance do you do? My current specialty is Pole Dance Artistry. But I love to dabble in an array of styles such as stiletto, hip-hop, contemporary and the like. Helps me stay on my toes!
What does dance mean to you? Soul. Dance is a means to express your vulnerabilities, perspectives, foresight and even color. By having the ability to teach and perform overseas, it proves that dance is a healing and inspiring regime. Dancing should be a freeing experience, one that illuminates the fantasy and delves into the deepest parts of human emotion. It's therapeutic, it's empowering and it's truly an imitation of life.
When did you start dancing? I have been twinkling these toes since the age of 5 in array of disciplines. It began with classical and core dance regimes, to individual and group competitive sports and simply mimicking things off television and in classes. I consider myself a "jill of the trade," dabbling in the many voices of movement.
Why did you start dancing? I think the operative question is why won't I stop dancing? My mother said I never stopped moving since the womb. I have always been a busy body. I was drawn to how life moved so intricately, yet simplistically and everybody had their own routine. Music soothed my family, enraged them but also brought them back together. So I started dancing, not only because it was gifted to me, but because it's how I communicated with my family, friends, crushes and to the world.
How does dancing make you feel? Dancing is a humbling experience. It has been my challenge, my inspiration and my healing power. It allows me to be a teacher, a nurturer and an inspiration to others. I have been blessed with a gift that I praise everyday and dare not take it for granted. And it doesn't hurt that I look taller when I perform !
